Realities blur in David Findlay's new film 'Faces' for Khaite

The story behind “Faces” -- from writer and director David Findlay -- lies in the ethereal atmosphere between reality and dreams.

Our personalities, or 'faces', are deeply layered. We all have our public self, our private self, the self we are around family, at work. Featuring Dutch top model Rianne van Rompaey, FACES is a playful eight-minute film born from van Rompaey’s own experiences within the fashion industry and the collision of each of her own selves. The film, also her acting debut, contains self-referential moments to her journey into acting and the new self that comes with it. She goes deeper into that process in a recent W Magazine interview.

Faces — David Findlay

Findlay, known for his poignant narrative films and work with first-time actors (including TIFF and Berlinale selection "Lay Me By The Shore"), weaves an intricate balance between a modern visual style fitting for fashion brand Khaite with the quirkiness of the film's "meta" exploration of self.

“I was struck by how well [David] understood what I wanted to make. His sensitivity to the themes that were important to me and the ideas that he brought up made me realize I had found my director. This creative connection led to a beautiful collaboration.”

The performances are fast and memorable, as viewers aren't quite sure which Rianne they're watching in each scene. Co-star Astrid Whettnall anchors each 'face' with a strong counter-performance as multiple characters. Fashion brand Khaite's wardrobe seamlessly adds definition and personality to each character.

Farm League co-produced the piece as part of our continued journey to invest in the narrative film space.
